June will soon be here bringing with it the conference season, and I will be attending the Local Government and National Delegate Conferences along with Julie Bromley and Chris Cotton.  These are an important part of the Unison calendar, where Unison policies are made.

The annual general meeting is probably the most important in the calendar for the branch, so it was extremely dispappointing to find that so few members attended.  The committee tried to make it more accessible by moving it to March – is there anything else we can do?

The AGM took place on Mon 10 March 2008, and a disappointing turn out from members meant the branch was ‘inquorate’ and therefore unable to carry out official business.   These items were instead resolved at March’s Branch Committee meeting, including the appointment of Branch Officers and Stewards for 2008/09. New to the committee is Robert Dunn, a Neighbourhood Warden. Robert has been a Unison steward for over a year and decided to step forward this year to fill the vacant Health & Safety Officer post.

The Annual General Meeting on 10 March will be the fifteenth since the first meeting in March 1994. During that time the problems we face today are little different to those we faced then. Pay is just as much an issue now, as is health & safety and since 1997, Single Status. Many Branch Committee officers and stewards have come and gone since 1994 and all of them have done good work on behalf of UNISON members in the branch. There are still openings for officers and stewards for 2008/09 so take this opportunity to become an activist in your union.

'Firstly a very belated happy new year and I hope that you all enjoyed the festive season.  2007 has been a difficult year, which follows the trend over recent years.  Our ongoing difficulties with Single Status continue to tax us although it is true to say that we are continuing to have positive negotiations on this issue and will do into 2008.  Let us hope that in 2008 we are able to get a reasonable pay settlement and we are not in the same position as last year with extended negotiations and the ballot for industrial action.
