The Norwich City branch is one of 8 Local Government Unison branches in Norfolk, alongside Norfolk County, Broadland and South Norfolk. Additionally there are a number of branches for other services, such as Norfolk Police, University of East Anglia and NHSi branches.
Initially, the branch was of the NALGO (National Association of Local Government Officers) union, which merged with NUPE and COHSE to form Unison on 1 July 1993. The Norwich City Unison branch was established a few months later on 1 April 1994. At the time, the branch included Norwich City Council's manual workers at CityWorks, now CityCare, as well as office based staff.
Today, around 500 members of Norwich City Council, as well as contractors CityCare and Steria are represented by the branch.
The branch is run by the Branch Committee on behalf of its members, and the Committee is made up of 15 officers, including Equalities, Lifelong Learning and International Relations. 21 stewards (some of whom are also officers) provide workplace coverage throughout the area of employment.
As well as representing members, activities in the branch include running local events, publicising national and local campaigns, attending local, regional and national conferences and meetings and establishing new schemes and procedures alongside the employer.
The branch also has affiliations to a large range of external organisations that promote issues that Unison supports, such as international issues in Tibet, Cuba, Columbia and South Africa. Find out more about our affiliations by clicking this link.
While all Unison branches support and promote the same overall aims, there can be a number of differences between individual branches. For example, not all of the employers are signed up to the National Agreement on Pay and Conditions of Service, and will therefore implement different pay increases and terms and conditions. Similarly, not all employers have signed off their single status agreements, meaning differences in the stage of implementation across the county.
